My understanding of what happened is as follows: Microsoft had a choice. They could add the Win32 (or whatever) capability in a way that complied with their contract (as a platform extension in the manner designed into Java for such things), or they could add it in a way that violated their contract (as a pollutant to the base language). They chose the latter, and when confronted with that fact, defiantly refused to change it. What else could Sun do but sue? JMHO.
