Peggylynn --

Thanks for digging out those press releases. They're really helpful.

The one on Philips says:

Uniphase currently provides the majority of the world's volume of 980nm semiconductor laser pumps and lithium niobate modulators and the Company is establishing production of fiber Bragg gratings. With the addition of the Philips Optoelectronics product lines the Company's product portfolio would include all of the components described above.

This fits with JDSU's extending its supply contract with SDL for the 980nm pump lasers:

SDL, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDLI) and JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq: JDSU; TSE: JDU) announced an extension to their contract through 2001 under which SDL supplies grating-stabilized 980 nm pump lasers to JDS Uniphase for JDS Uniphase's high-performance erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). The contract extension more than doubles the base quantities which were agreed upon in the previous contract.

I know SDL has patented techniques for fiber Bragg gratings, so maybe this is a factor, too. I just wish I understood the bits and pieces better.

Watching today's stock action, I'm wondering if we can break through the old intra-day high of 244. :)
