WinStar Ready to Join Cable, Phone Company to Reach Consumers

New York, June 6 (Bloomberg) -- WinStar Communications Inc., which uses wireless links to provide phone and data service to businesses, would team with a company such as Cablevision Systems Corp. to reach consumers, Chief Executive William Rouhana said.

The company would also be receptive to a partnership with America Online Inc., after it acquires Time Warner Inc., or AT&T Corp., Rouhana said. Also, he said a weak stock market has prompted reconsideration of a public sale of stock in the company's Office.com service, which provides Internet access to small and medium-sized businesses. In March, he said the company was considering such a sale.

Establishing WinStar's own consumer marketing and service operation is more expensive than gaining such capabilities in a partnership. Companies such as AT&T are investing heavily to establish connections directly to consumers for Internet, phone and other services. WinStar could help a partner extend the reach of its network.

New York-based WinStar fell 3/16 to 34 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading yesterday.

Rouhana said that since predicting $700 million in revenue for the year, the company has won additional contracts from government and large businesses. In an interview with Bloomberg News at a Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown conference in New York, he said that the current sales target is ``achievable.''
