a people gets the government they deserve

Yeah, well, maybe. Sometimes. Not always.

Back in '53 the Iranians thought they deserved Mossadegh. The CIA disagreed, and gave them the Shah. Did they deserve that?

Did the Vietnamese deserve the French, did the Cubans and Mexicans and all the others deserve the Spanish?

On the other hand, what have most Americans done to deserve the freedom they have?

It has to come from the bottom not because it should be that way, but because it is that way. It isn't fair, and I don't really think they deserve it. They got it anyway.

One great thing about the end of the cold war, though, is that it's removed a lot of the incentive the US government had to support the feudal gangsters. When the shit hits the fan again, and it will, it's going to be a little harder for the good ol' boys to run to Uncle Sam and howl about the communists threatening their "freedom".

If the Americans wake up, that is, and see that not all threats to freedom, economic liberty, and democracy come from the left, and not all third world anti-feudal movements are tied into some vast and unified anti-American conspiracy.

We'll see.

Still late afternoon here. I always get the last word.
