$250k gets you a decent house in Burlington, close to Route 128/Boston hi-tech area. That is kind of the average.

The Chestnut Hill area in Brookline, perhaps the best location in the Boston region, has 3000 sq. ft. houses going for $600k. And that is very, very much to the high end.

Trust me, I just bought.

Even down in Orlando, FL there is a shortage of homes and bidding wars are starting down there. The avg pay down in FL is 20-30% behind here in the NorthEast. But housing prices are acclerating down there also. Many that don't have homes and are looking are being priced out...
