Gross vehicle weight wasn't the same in my calc. I figure that a locomotive weighs more than a loaded car. A good bit more.

Here was my baseline calc for a boxcar.
One hundred tons on eight wheels. That's 25 thousand pounds on each wheel. Allow a two-square-inch contact patch generated by elastic "give" of rail and wheel (and I admit that this is as WAGgy as WAGs come), and there you go.
I figure that those really big drive wheels on a steam locomotive have steel-on-steel contact of four to eight square inches per wheel.

It's to be remembered that these rough calcs give static loads. A train that is boogie-ing across not quite even rail will generate much higher local dynamic pressures. But perhaps still inside the 116000 psi quoted earlier.
