Tim Saturday - 09:27 06/03/2000, EST Strong Quake Rattles Tokyo, Eastern Suburbs TOKYO (Reuters) - An earthquake strong enough to cause minor structural damage shook buildings in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, and hit hardest in its eastern suburbs on Saturday, the Meteorological Agency said. The earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the open-ended Richter scale was felt most strongly in suburban and rural areas of Chiba Prefecture, which borders Tokyo to the east, where it may have caused minor damage to buildings, the agency said. It was severe enough to knock items off shelves and to cause buildings in the capital to sway. However, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Narita airport, the main international hub for Tokyo and to the east of the capital in Chiba Prefecture, closed its main runway for a few minutes after the tremor. Train lines serving Tokyo and its eastern suburbs were also temporarily shut down, transport authorities said. The epicenter of the tremor, which struck at 5:54 p.m. (0854 GMT), was in northern Chiba Prefecture, about 60 miles east of Tokyo. The agency said there was no danger of a tsunami, or tidal wave.
