reg:Furukawa Electric owns 20% of JDSU. Has more optical patents than LU.

Q: What about the optical networking area you're so intrigued with?

Gabelli:
Optical electronics is transforming the way data and broadband transmissions

are utilized. Furukawa Electric of Japan is known as a construction

company but its global dominance in optical electronics is virtually unknown.

It will supply the NTT system. It holds more patents than Lucent Technologies

in that area. It's the original owner of JDS Uniphase. They own 20% of it now.

That 20% stake is equal to the whole market value of Furukawa. Of course,

about six weeks ago it was equal to 180% of the whole market value of Furukawa.

That's volatility for you. We think there will be a carve-out of their optical electronics business.

To the extent that optical electronics is going to be the next high-growth

area of technology and transforms this industry, Furukawa is a prime beneficiary.
