David, if I cover either side of the position it's no longer pure COMS arbitrage, instead I would be making a bet on the price movement of PALM. I don't have any strong feeling for how PALM will move, because PALM moves with all the other "new economy" stocks... i.e. up and down with the manic-depressive swings of the Nasdaq. So I don't plan to play that right now.

I am going to hold the whole position until 7/28 and cover my PALM short with the actual PALM dividend. One reason: my position is held at an expensive brokerage (because that was the only place I could find PALM to borrow). I want to save the 1.3% commission plus the bid/ask spread involved in covering PALM in the open market.
