A while back there was some waffling on this subject after some subscribers complained when a restrictive policy was imposed

I don't remember the specifics, but I believe there was at one time a limit of 10 minutes playing time of video download? It certainly hasn't been an issue with Shaw. I haven't seen it pop up in the media or on any boards for a long time.

GP do you have any restrictions with your service?

A long time ago I asked ATHM what the story was with limits on streaming video. They told me there was a restriction on the uplink you can do as a customer. It is 10 megs. So if you try to upload more than 10 megs it bombs. This, I was told, was because some users abused the system (Fremont case, I assume). They pointed out that At Work was available if you wanted a good pipe both ways. Downloading is no problem and there is no restriction on the amount of streaming video you can have. The guy also told me that this was the policy of TCI and other cable operators may be different.

When the comment came up recently, I checked with them again and the policy seemed to be the same. I do remember trying to send a email attachment of 20 or so megs recently and it did not go. Sunday I watched the European NFL football game live in streaming video for 45 minutes with no problem. Pretty good quality too.

The restrictions on streaming content were part of the original MDA, which is now history. As I recall, Tom Offenbach, claimed these restriction were put in place because at the time (1996) the MSOs feared that streaming video content might compete with their broadcast offerings.

I don't believe the restrictions were ever enforced.

I'm not sure if any contractual restrictions to streaming content exist at this time. I listen to streaming audio frequently via my AT&T@Home connection, without problems.
