Alcatel Introduces New Open-Standard Voice Over Packet Solutions

BusinessWire, 06/5/2000 11:16

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5,
2000--SUPERCOMM--Service providers can now
converge voice and data networks with Alcatel's
Voice over Packet (VoP) solutions. Alcatel
(NYSE:ALA), a global communications leader,
combines extensive voice expertise with the latest
packet capabilities to deliver carrier-class,
open-standard solutions. Designed for multi-vendor
networks, Alcatel's new VoP suite -- the Alcatel
SoftSwitch, Trunking Gateway, Signaling Server,
Packet Tandem and Intelligent Network (IN)
applications -- provides the flexibility required for
today's converged networks.

Alcatel's VoP suite includes products that enable established service
providers to leverage their existing networks and offer converged voice
and data services to their subscribers, while protecting their investment.
With Alcatel's VoP solutions, new providers can offer differentiated
services into rapidly expanding markets. Additionally, Alcatel offers
revenue generating, value-added intelligent services for e-commerce,
customer care and targeted advertising applications.

At SuperComm 2000 in Atlanta, Alcatel will showcase its suite of products
for the VoP environment. These include the SoftSwitch, Trunking Gateway,
Signaling Server, Packet Tandem and IN applications. Alcatel will also
demonstrate interoperability across multi-vendor environments and
services:

-- End-to-end call control with the Alcatel SoftSwitch system and

RadiSys Trunking Gateway

-- Voice over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) with the Alcatel

SoftSwitch and Newbridge 36170 Gateway

-- Location based e-commerce and customer care applications for

Internet Protocol (IP) networks

"Today, service providers are faced with many challenges -- offering
value-added differentiated services, maintaining customer loyalty, and
ensuring profitability -- all in a rapidly changing technology landscape,"
said Claire Lewis, vice president, Next Generation Networks Marketing for
Alcatel in the US. "Alcatel understands these challenges. Our VoP portfolio
offers differentiated converged voice data services today. The VoP
platform can grow and evolve with the needs of our customers."

A driver in open-standard acceptance, Alcatel actively participates in
many standards bodies, such as the International SoftSwitch Consortium,
The ATM Forum, and the IN Forum. Alcatel also has contributed a
peer-to-peer protocol communication standard solution to the Internet
Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards body. This open-standard
solution is being implemented in the Signaling Server. Additionally, Alcatel
is participating in interoperability testing with a consortium of equipment
providers to standardize SS7 over IP networks.

Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end
voice and data networking solutions to established and new carriers as
well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees
and sales of EURO 23 billion in 1999, Alcatel operates in more than 130
countries.
