My central office for my home ADSL is .4 mile from my house. Thus the fast speeds. I access all the usual investment websites, MSN Investor, SI, Yahoo, Raging Bull, Datek, etc. I don't know where these servers are. I thought this is what the cache companies like AKAM and INKT do, i.e. put servers around the country for companies so they will close to their customers.

At my office, I'm 3.3 miles from the nearest phone central office, and I still get consistent speeds of 500K. ADSL at my office is from Telocity and through my USB port. They sent me the modem, and I had it up and running in 30 minutes. I have been REAL pleased with Telocity.

What is this I hear about Covad, etc. getting around the limitations of distance from central stations by building ministations closer to their subscribers and then routing it through T1 lines to the phone system?

Here is the speed test I use, computingcentral.msn.com
