You are right, Avedon did a lot of "purer" work, but there was not a sharp distinction of origin made in the show, only a high quality aggregation. When one first walked in, there was a close up portrait of Eisenhower that was a knockout..... I have never been to the Rijksmuseum, and I love Dutch painting, but I can see how one might get surfeited with conventional portraiture. The National Gallery has the best collection of Dutch painting in the country. Go over to the Corcoran, and one can get bored by the also- rans. Even the Met, in New York, has an uneven collection of Dutch paintings, and one can see the difference between school and individual artist more clearly as a result, or notice the variations in an artist's output. You want heresy: I prefer Vermeer to Rembrandt, and consider Van Dyke and Reubens to represent the decay of Dutch painting.........

I was taken to the Rijksmuseum as a child, I think I was 9. It seemed endless. We spent three days going through it. I think I enjoyed the first day. I enjoyed it more as an adult.
