Frank- hmmm...I don't know what to think. I can't quite tell what you personally think either. At first glance, appears to be GG material. Intuitively it's hard to fathom the light down a hair diameter fiber can be converted into enough power to do as proposed. I take it you are truly neutral on it's viability at this time, right? -MikeM(From Florida)

Interesting. Don't follow PV stuff much, personally. I never really saw that as a convincing argument against FTTH, but I suppose these people are grasping for any straws they can find to perpetuate their 3-5 year infrastructure reconstruction and cronie reelection cycle.

I guess it all comes down to the efficiency of the PV's (which for solar apps is somewhere in the mid teens, so very low, but perhaps it is much better for this particular appdue to coherence?), and the amount of power needed to support the lifeline circuitry. Surely someday this will be economically practical (maybe it is now), but I'm wondering if todays devices still need some supplemental "direct electrical" power, as well as how much they cost, how large the entire setup is, and how it performs over temperature extremes. There's a pretty strong efficiency degradation with heat (ambient temp), as I recall (for solar PV which may not be a good comparison).

So I dunno how real it is, but I would add that there is usually a couple year lag between the point something is technically feasible (i.e. first productization) and economically viable to produce en masse.

Anyone with details please speak up! I'll see if I can find more later.
