Leaders listen to the voices of the people and the values they cherish. Then energize and facilitate the flowering of ideas within that cultural foundation. When leadership is disconnected with the mores of the culture, engendering followship becomes extremely difficult. The impeachment episode was a reflection of that disconnection.

Current leaders listen to polls and how it can affect their personal objectives... the public wishes be damned. [unless. of course, the politicians will sense danger to their political carreers]

Therefore, the need for a more informed public who will know how to place the correct pressure to the appropriate politician as it may be applicable.

As for the "disconnection"... Indeed, the ultraconservative Republicans saw nothing but the impeachment of their arch-rival, Billy-boy. Personally, I think they hurt themselves. Then again, being the zealots they are, all the better.

My dilemma has always been the same, who do I make an alliance with...

The right ? (since I am a capitalist, I attempt to be a fair and reasonable one). The problem is... I can't stand their extremist side, i.e. the religious zealots who think our morality should be controlled by the government. Hell No ! I am no zealot.

The Left ? (Hell no ! they are a bunch of tax hungry maniacs) -- but at least they live my personal life alone, up to me, the individual.

The Libertartians -- Ouch, they are nuts, they preach "reason above all" yet, I am not sure if they fall somewhere between Ted Kasinsky, Pat Buchannan, Ross Perot, or some other gold-loving bug who hears no reason but some chant that sounds good on paper. Upon closer examination, there seems to be no consistency to the followers since they are all.. well too independent from the next.

So I guess, I just play within the system, and do my best. The rest be damned. We are all here in our respective soap box... I guess the Internet is the Speaker's corner (as in the one in Hyde Park, in London), except this one is from the comfort of one's own home.

When leadership is disconnected with the mores of the culture, engendering followship becomes extremely difficult.

Whether we like it or not, Clinton's approval ratings have remained extremely high throughout, which suggests that the mores of the culture are not what they once were. While I understand your feelings on the matter, it does not seem that the majority of Americans agree. Is it really Clinton who is disconnected with the mores of the culture? Vox populi....

Since the Clinton administration is not running for re-election, it hardly matters. I don't see any reason to believe that either of the current candidates are listening to the voices of the people. These are consummate children of privilege, born and raised in the world of politics and utterly divorced from the realities of everyday life. I don't expect either to be an agent of meaningful change, and I suspect that either way it goes, the next administration will be an exercise in damage control.

Like several other posters here, I hope fervently that whichever party wins the presidency takes a battering in the legislature. That would be cause for hope.

I do, I confess, tend to look at Bush as the greater of two evils; simply because foreign policy has an unusually high weighting in my calculation. I think that Bush has surrounded himself with some dangerous individuals in that department, and I doubt that he has the knowledge or the will to check and balance their rather extreme positions. Possibly an opposing legislature would be able to provide that balance.

On a lighter note, the Napster search engine has been causing me some distress. I went out looking for the work of Charlie Christian, and was delighted to see so many responses roll up, until I saw that most of them consisted of Christian music from the Charlie Daniels band. I can see how that would be inevitable, but it was still a shock to my delicate sensibilities. I can't imagine what would happen if I had to listen to the stuff.

>When you have a person who is divisive, untrustworthy as well as a liar, it effects the environment around which meaningful change will occur. Such was and is the case in regard to our current administration.<

C'mon man, every President lies, as well as every other Homo Sapien on the planet.
Take Reagen, either he lied under oath dozens of times or his Alzhiemers was in full bloom. It wasn't.
>When leadership is disconnected with the mores of the culture<

It is those who would sell their souls to the devil to destroy him for the purpose of furthering their personal agendas who are disconnected from the mores of our culture.
