TP - I'm still not sure what you mean by access to the CPU through a high speed connection. One could design a VI interface like Giganet has done, to eliminate stack overhead and go directly from app space to the hardware. 1394 is just not fast enough to require anything more direct than that. Gigabit ethernet is more than twice as fast as firewire...

I agree that backward compatibility is often a rocky road. I personally don't have a problem in assuring that I have the right cables for the job. USB is, as you point out, new enough that there is not a whole lot of infrastructure out there, nothing like the 10BASET ethernet infrastructure. People will cope. I am happily using USB and 1394 for video work today, under Win98SE, and I imagine I will be able to work through anything that comes up. This stuff is still a whole lot easier than what came before.
