Heinz, I think that as long as most goods, assets and services are cheaper in the US than anywhere else in the developed world, the dollar should be OK. Prices in Europe and Japan from hamburgers to real estate are still considerably higher than what they are in the US, even after the recent dollar rise.

I have to confess that I still do not understand the argument that gold is needed as a backup to a currency, if said currency has demonstrated over a long period that it can buy lots of stuff that is much more useful than gold.
