Re: "But that's not what is happening is it?? Are the poor getting richer?" Yes, I believe so. An extremely poor friend of mine, when I visit him, can offer me, and can afford to offer me, foodstuffs and comforts that would make a king of old sh@t gold bricks to even imagine such variety and comfort. Re: "I hardly think this(fear of change, progress, resulting job losses, etc.) has been a concern during 'centuries of progress'..." In fact the story is as old as the hills...fear of new ways and technologies and resulting job loss, the loss of "what we know." A quick look around would reveal to you that this very sort of thing has not only been a concern during centuries of progress, it has been a common theme in probably every society undergoing change throughout centuries of progress...and it's often been used to squelch progress as long as possible. Truly old hat stuff. Re: "<Such pessimistic prophecies are seen to be self defeating, since without jobs and money, a satisfactory market in which to sell wouldn't exist- hence technology advancement would cease as the world spiraled down towards the imagined doom of the masses and/or the poor being without the money to purchase the needs of life. > Sounds like the third world, suppliers of basic materials." Sure, that's what it sounds like...except that the third world, is also no adequate market for technologies yet today, the basic materials business business itself would die without a market of appropriately monied folks, and of course, progress won't take us there. Try again, to imagine a world where the masses have no jobs nor money to buy things, and then in that scenario try to imagine a reason for even the basic materials business to continue... to imagine so implies we all quit trying...and it is utterly absurd fallacious thinking.
