You have not cleared up any misconceptions seeded on this
thread--you have promulgated them. Of course solar cells
are photovoltaics and the best efficiencies available, for
the solar spectrum, are less than 32% with 20-25% in
commercial devices. At 1550nm, the quantum efficiency, the
conversion of photons into electron-hole pairs, is not so
good and there are other problems depending on the device
and what it is made of. If you claim 40%, and you suggested
50% efficiency at 1550nm, you better apply for some peer
reviewed grant $$--or was that the company that went bankrupt and folded ?

Sure, emergency life-line handset power might be possible,
at the few microwatt level. Don't be firing 10mj/20ns pulses up my fiber link tho-- that is horsepucky.
