jim: Did you see Anand's Computex report (see below)? He didn't see any working DDR mobo's. So, for the purposes of the more enlightened posters on this board, do we consider him to be a wee Shimpi (ggg) with no credibility, or a talented analyst / net publisher? I think he saw Bilow there, though (G). Live from Taipei June 7th, 2000 9:57 AM - Anand Lal Shimpianandtech.com Remember me? I hope so ;) I landed in Taipei a couple of days ago and have been in meetings and visiting with companies pretty much every minute since I landed. I have quite a bit to report on but I'm going to save the entire article for when I get back in Raleigh. My flight leaves here Friday morning so I should be back in Raleigh on Friday as well (aren't timezones great?). But in order to tide you over until then I'll briefly talk about some of the things I've encountered while at this year's Computex: Motherboard manufacturers are seriously getting hurt by Intel. Most of the companies we talked to weren't shipping many 820 and 840 products and they were hoping for the success of the i815E otherwise they will be in a very interesting situation with Intel. Most of the guys we talked to agree that RDRAM will definitely take a backseat to DDR SDRAM this year, although we got mixed responses in terms of what the various manufacturers thought would happen towards the end of next year. Some believed that RDRAM would fail miserably, others believed that it was destined to succeed. Regardless of their differences, they all agreed that at this point in time the shift towards RDRAM wasn't helping and it was definitely entirely too early. While I saw DDR266 banners from VIA all over the place, there wasn't a single motherboard on demo. The reason for this is simply because VIA doesn't have samples ready. The only DDR266 Athlon platform I saw was a mockup board from IWill which featured ALi's upcoming DDR266 chipset. I have quite a bit to say about the DDR Athlon platforms that you can expect to see in the near future, but I'll leave that for the full update which should make its way to you all on Monday. I've got a ton of pictures of i815E and Socket-A motherboards as well as my list of things to love and hate from Computex which I'll fill you in on after I get back. I'm not really sure what the server situation is since from here in Taipei just about every site is slower than I can remember my old 2400 baud modem being. Before I left Raleigh on Saturday I made sure that all of the BX133 benchmarks were done for the Thunderbird review but I'm not sure why my Overclocking Investigation didn't make it up that same day. I'm sure Mike has an explanation for me but if you're wondering why I didn't post overclocked Thunderbird and BX133 scores on Monday with the Thunderbird review ask Mike. I have a lot more to say but I'll leave that for when I get back. For now, take care and have a wonderful weekend.
