The really smart thing to do is to set up Roth IRA's for children/students who are earning the required wages. It's a great way to make a gift to a kid who has 40+ years of tax - free compounding to take advantage of, assuming that Uncle Sam doesn't take it away. Lesson learned: Do it while you can. You can also use the money to pay college bills, but I would only use it as a last resort.
