Damnation if you broke fast and still dared to take Communion.

Did anyone ever actually do that?

I'm not sure what my penance was.

Wasn't it ten Our Fathers and ten Hail Marys? Did you ever experience any variation? LOL

Seriously, though, I don't know that I was afraid so much an frustrated and aghast. My nuns were always very nice. The worst thing that ever happened to me in catechism class was having to miss "Let's Pretend" on the radio, which was on at the same time as class. You remember that show? With the song about the teddy bears' picnic.

I was frustrated because I kept asking "why" and the only answer I ever got was a glare and a "because God said so" or "the Pope said so." And aghast because it didn't seem right to me that all my little Protestant and Jewish friends couldn't go to heaven, among other things, and I wanted to hear a good reason.

It did take a long time to recover from the guilt, though.
