Many of the "56K' modems don't work at 56K unless you download a software upgrade from the PC or modem manufacturer. My Compaq did that for awhile until I figured out the problem -- makes a big difference....

Even with the s/w download that OMD suggested you might still have limitations based on the actual physical cable plant that doesn't allow you to get anywhere close to 56k. Since you have two different providers and still have the problem, it suggests that it is the last mile connection that is the problem. IMHO.

Like OMD just said, I know there are programs that you can download to speed things up. I'm not sure where to find them, but your computer manufacturer would be a good place to start. Even in a perfect world you will never get 56K. Some of the pipline gets reserved for technical backchecking, or some such mumbo jumbo, heading in the other direction. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that 35-40 K is normal for a 56K modem, and that in the 40's is considered good. Same thing happens with the higher speeds as well. My DSL is supposedly 640K. According to my ISP, most people get about 440. I've been getting about 550K, but there is still a difference because of the administrative/technical needs. My soon to be new provider has 800K to 2Mil K packages. Every time you turn around things get faster and faster.

Did you get those 2 email BTW that I sent the other night to AZ. It looked like one came back undeliverable.

The download will help but if you want to add a little more punch you can buy a program from bonzi.

bonzi.com

It works well and will speed up page loads & things that you use like DWA. I think it's worth the $30.00.
