I know one trick for checking if something is "hot" and that's touching it with the back of your hand. You can't grab on with the back of your hand, the muscles that clench will cause you to pull your hand away.

We used to do that when switching pumps at Exxon refinery, every shift every pump would be turned off and the one next to it turned on (connected in parallel) so we could check them. But they're outside all day long, in the rain if it's raining, so before you touched the switch, you put the back of your hand on the pump housing.
