So it stayed on com 2 but still dialed erratically. So I changed the bios back to auto and tried a different modem which wouldn't connect at all, maybe because I didn't reinstall my dial up programs. So, I stuck my original modem back in and it works fine now...and I don't know why. All I can figure is that I have/had so kind of IRQ conflict. If it happens again I'll uninstall the sound card and modem and reinstall the modem...see how that works. If it works I'll then install the sound card...which is PCI so I'm still not sure about the conflict. <G>

Jim ,

That's the same problem I have had since I changed chips and motherboards.....the modem. I have gone thru 3..can't find the com ports, doesn't dial or drops off while on line. The other problem has been my clock won't hold the time.....only catches up when I shut my pc down. When I reboot, it starts to fall behind again.
