But you see- that is a fool's errand. NOBODY can perform as well as an index, because indexes are rejiggered to pull in winners and throw out the losers- but by the time the new additions and subtractions are announced and begun to use in the calculation, the prices have already moved by index fund managers piling into or out of those new stocks.

It's the classic quantum physics problem of being unable to observe a particle without changing its speed or direction, etc.
