Yes, it is a disheartening story. My father lived on the edge of Potomac, not on an estate, by any means, but in a nice development, so it hits home to me. I hate values clarification courses with all my heart, and wish that elementary character education would take hold. But the situation is pretty bad. I once taught an adult education seminar on Aristotle's Nicomachean ethics, and had a participant who was a religious ethics teacher at a parochial high school, and she was full of fuzzy modern "values" stuff. She could hardly make head nor tails of the classical view of justice, especially retribution.....
