I'm not sure either. From the Associated Press. This is true: June 12, 2000 Manchester College Defends PC List A.P. College administrators in the northeast city have issued a list of potentially offensive words and phrases that they urge staff and students to avoid. A guidebook singles out the words ``history'' and ``man-made'' because of their gender implications, as well as the phrase ``slaving over a hot stove'' because of its reference to slavery. It says ``crazy'' could offend a person with mental health problems, and that ``ladies and gentlemen'' carries class implications. Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, which aims to improve state education standards, called the guidebook ``absolute nonsense,'' saying language should be dictated by manners and not by an institutionally issued mandate. ``The only person who might be offended by the word history is a radical feminist,'' he said. ``It is a word that has been used for hundreds of years.'' He added that ``slaving over a hot stove'' was more likely to evoke the image of a chef than a slave. But college spokesman Richard Tuson said the list was part of a comprehensive equal opportunities policy, serving the same purpose as wheelchair access and family-friendly schedules in making everybody feel welcome. ``This is not about political correctness. It is about sensitivity and people's feelings,'' Tuson said.
