Taking into account the circumstances, our system should tell us if this person has a rightful and honorable reason to reenter our culture. The perp made the decisions that eliminated their right to claim a spot among us. I feel no responsibility to make it ok for him to reenter.

Is it a question of responsibility or of practical utility? Wouldn't it be cheaper to at least make an effort to rehabilitate the less nasty classes of criminal and teach them some useful trade than to keep them locked up in perpetuity? If we stress rehabilitation and vocational training, is that charity or enlightened self-interest?

Many obviously are unchanged or even worsened by the penal system. Yet, reenter they do and because the system is bankrupt they hit a revolving door.

That leaves two options: either change the system and try to break that revolving pattern, or never let anyone out. Which seems preferable to you?

I don't believe in victimless crime.

Smoking marijuana is a crime in most places, and a lot of people are in jail for doing it. Who's the victim?

Tell that to the child of your favorite crack whore and the
HIV infected ex-wives and children of his/her clients.

If someone screws a crack whore and gets HIV, are they victims of crack or of their own stupidity in having unprotected sex with a high-risk partner?

We could use that rationale to ban guns, alcohol, cigarettes, cars, extramarital sex, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Should we? To what extent should the State be expected to protect us from ourselves, or to punish us for acts we have not yet committed?
