I agree that educationists have been faddish and wrong- headed for quite awhile, and the Democrats have helped shield them from accountability. That is why I see no alternative to vouchers and charter schools. If we cannot bring some market discipline to bear, we will continue to waste money. A few years ago, at the parents orientation for 6th grade, I tried to ask a few simple questions about the math curriculum. The teacher got weirdly defensive, when she saw that I knew something about math, and was not just making conversation, and clammed up, repeating the mantra that they followed the syllabus approved by the board, and referring me to the central office if I had questions. I wasn't even very pointed, just curious about a couple of things. Then, she asked if my son knew his "math facts", although it was okay if he didn't. When they say "math facts" at that point, they mean the multiplication tables. She did not expect a 6th grader to know the multiplication tables!
