Hi HDL,

RE: the cheap computer manufacturers hurt the dells, compaqs, ibms, hewlett packards, etc.

While seven families I know should not be considered a large enough cohort for the whole computer buying population, e-machines actually helped DELL. All except one of them returned their e-machine and purchased a DELL online. They got a much better machine for not a significant amount of more money. They were fooled into thinking digital manipulation software, scanning images to computer, and heaven forbid, video editing would run smoothly on a $399 machine (after $75 rebate). They were fooled into thinking that a 4.3 HDD would hold all their costco bought software. They all said, "the salesperson said it is a good machine."

On one hand we have software and accessories which require more computing power, more space,, etc..and a fooled segment of the population thinking it can be done at a price equivalent of a family of 4 outing to Yankee Stadium. They realized this after the mistake, and then were so fed up that they sat at friends' computers and bought DELL's. Now, they are happy.

(Of course, maybe they were just fed up with me bothering them to buy DELL's and bought them just to shut me up!)

hdl: Cheap PC manufacturers did not hurt Dell. They created or supported a market which was almost non-existant before. Besides free computers is a misuse of the word free.
Their existance created a differential market for Dell on a quality perception and also opened the lower end for Dell.

It is the habit forming "once you have it, you can't live without it" syndrome.

For all the PC doomsayers, you probably won't see the demand reduction in our life time. so why worry about it.
When I follow a company, I first look at my perception of what their business plan is(since I don't have their business plan in my hands). If they can be a solid company based on their goals, it should be strong enough to keep an interest.

Once the company is chosen only thing is can it keep on building strength. That is enough to keep me sticking with the company. Dell is doing all the right things for me not to worry between 18% growth or 50% growth. As per buying more, depends upon each quarters performance.

Those who wants to sing PC demise or Dell's demise, it is their wistful thinking.
