The excuse of every CEO while he mishandles and mismanages in the short term is that he's looking out for the long term. When the long term becomes the here and now, he says the market conditions were mis perceived. Yada, Yada, Yada. Like the final refuge of many a scoundrel, it often just means he's concerned about himself and not his shareholders, who can all go screw while he lines his pockets. Esrey had to know his statements would hit WCOM.
