Buchanan Lashes Out at Bush The Associated Press Thursday, June 15, 2000; 8:32 p.m. EDT NEW YORK Reform Party presidential hopeful Patrick Buchanan lashed out Thursday at Gov. George W. Bush for removing Civil War commemorative plaques from the Texas high court. "Mr. Bush is kowtowing to the NAACP, quite frankly," he said at a news conference. "Removal of plaques that respected and honored Southern heritage is an act of political vandalism which tells us that 'compassionate conservatism' is but a synonym for squishy Republicanism." He went on to accuse Bush of "sacrificing the honored heritage of the South to the unappeasable gods of political correctness." Bush's presidential campaign declined to comment Thursday. Two plaques bearing Confederate symbols were removed from the lobby of the Texas Supreme Court building this month and replaced with ones that say equal justice is available to all Texans "regardless of race, creed or color." The original plaques quoted Gen. Robert E. Lee and included symbols of the Confederate battle flag and seal of the Confederacy. Confederate heritage groups complained about the removal and promised legal action. The Texas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and others said the original plaques were offensive to minorities and had asked Bush, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, to have them removed. The Confederate flag became a campaign issue earlier this year during the primary in South Carolina, where officials were debating the flying of the Confederate flag over the state Capitol. DMA, All this furor about the death penalty is much the same as not allowing camping in an area because it might disturb a spotted owl, or something. That is one of the reasons liberals are called "bleeding hearts". Gore is beginning to "shoot himself in the foot" more and more but, I don't intend to make a fuss about it. I want to see him self-destruct as quickly as possible. As you may know, we in Texas have a really volatile situation regarding the death penalty. This Gary Graham guy, a know criminal and miscreant, has some how garnered a lot of support for a new trial based on, suddenly found, new witnesses that are about as dependable as a leaky boat. The single witness that identified him has received death threats and damage to her, and her family's home. This witness saw Graham gun down an unarmed man and then nonchalantly stroll around in full view of her for over a minute. That may not sound like a long time, but if one counts it out, it is plenty of time to remember what a person looks like. This witness was also an African American, as is Graham, so no one can use the old saying that she was mistaken because "they all look alike to me". Yesterday, a militant black Muslim imam, or preacher, or something, said that Graham should not be executed "or else!!" Another says that Allah will take revenge if he is executed. Graham has already been granted one stay, and has exhausted all of the possible appeals he can make, and has been confirmed guilty in every one. He is quite lucky that he will go painlessly by lethal injection. A criminal of his ilk should get the electric chair, hanging, or a firing squad. ~;=;o --haqi
