Orson, Sony can only "dump" Memory Stick after selling host devices.

Have you seen the Memory Stick Walkman? Well, it doesn't even use a Memory Stick, it uses Magic Gate. Also, Memory Stick and Magic Gate aren't cross compatible. Sony is also trying to "dump" their Anthrax3 compression standard which nobody wants.

Sony did great with their floppy version of the Mavica, but that is old news now. Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Kodak are manufacturing very popular digital cameras and the convenience of a floppy drive at the expense of low capacity and low resolution will simply not work.

My biggest fears are Sony convincing Palm to use Memory Stick as a standard in their next handheld and Sony's $33 million dollar investment in Transmeta. The Transmeta series of chips combined with the Unix OS could take a run at simpler RISC-based processors (although the vastness of the digital camera, MP3 and cell phone markets will likely overshadow these appliances in the near-term). This is still several years off, however it would be nice to at least have a foot in the door.

Sony still has the potential to dominate the Japanese market.

We'll take the rest of the World any day.
