If it is Guillain-Barre, that wouldn't be so bad, my Merck Manual says that only 1.5 to 8% of patients die. Etiology is unknown, diagnosis is made on the basis of the clinical syndrome, in regular English that means that the way to diagnose is on the basis of symptoms. The main symptom is progressive muscle weakness which may lead to respiratory failure. A examination of spinal fluid may be helpful, but I expect that under the circumstances the doctors have already done a spinal tap. I believe Guillain-Barre is well known enough that the doctors have considered it, but even if that is what she has, the only way to treat is via supportive measures, which she already has.

I wonder if they've tested her for any of the things we have raised.

Someone mentioned she might even have been poisoned somehow. I'm sure they checked for that, though.
