Clinton realizes that in order to fight the fight, he has to maintain his standing in the polls. When he sees that popular opinion is about to steamroll him, he will attempt to coopt the issue, such as balanced budget in 1996, welfare reform in 1997, and so on. If anything, the government is spending more on welfare now than it was before welfare reform. The socialist rags aren't democratic socialists. They're still dreaming of Politburos and Great Cultural Reforms of Mao. But then they still think you can ram down socialism/communism down the throats of everyone else since they don't have to run for office. Billary tried it with that Health Care Task Force and they were nearly run out of town. If not for threatening to shut down the government on the 1995 budget battle, Clinton would have long disappeared. That was his lone success.
