Chaz,

<< Would it be practical / possible to equip a phone or handheld or laptop or desktop with one slot (and appropriate flexible software) to handle more than one "card", so that it would be possible to insert the SIM card to start up get connected etc. and then pull that card out and insert a similar size card which had credit card like functions for transactions with banks, etc.? >>

Probably not practical or feasible, at least as it relates to a GSM phone, where the SIM needs to be present at all times (except for 911 calls).

As for laptops or desktops, smart card readers are available with USB or serial port connections. In addition PCMCIA smart card readers are available for laptops. You could use more than one reader. Even if the SIM is "Plug-In" format, adapters are available to put the "Plug-In" in a credit card size card. The SIM could be removed from the phone and used in a desktop or laptop this way.

In addition the phone (with SIM) can function as a wireless modem for the laptop, or PDA, which in turn could be equipped with a smart card reader.

<< seem like there would be a good deal of push from banks and others who would like to find a way to use wireless for transactions >>

So it would seem.

>> World First for Gemplus and Mobilix as Subscribers Reload Air Time Over The Air

G‚menos,
7 June 2000

Gemplus, the world No.1 provider of smart card based solutions, with partners Mobilix and PBS, has developed a revolutionary system for the purchase of air time by credit card via a mobile phone. Danish operator Mobilix?s customers can now reload their mobile phones with air time Over The Air, directly from their bank/credit card account.

Since November last year, Mobilix has been running a pilot scheme whereby more than 100 customers have been able to reload air time Over The Air (OTA) with new menu options on their mobile handsets. After a successful trial run, with customers declaring that the OTA payment system is as efficient and as effective as the ?physical? Dankort system, Mobilix has now launched the first commercial service of this kind in the world.

The user interface, developed by Gemplus, is based on SIM ToolKit technology. The service is available anytime, anywhere via new, user-friendly menus on the SIM card. Since it is based on the international EMV standard and is endorsed by Dankort, Eurocard, Mastercard and VISA/Dankort, the new service will accept any payment card.

Transaction security is guaranteed by standard Dankort security procedures and the enhanced security advantages of the SIM card. No sensitive data is transmitted over the Mobilix network. The customer?s credit card number is registered confidentially with Mobilix where it is linked to the customer?s mobile phone number and SIM card. The customer merely enters a four digit PIN code to launch the transaction. The transaction is secure and invisible, taking no more than 10 seconds to complete, whereupon the customer receives notification in the form of an enhanced SMS text message.

This solution is available at Mobilix? sales outlets where a new SIM card costs 100 DKK. An agreement is signed and, as soon as this document has been registered by Mobilix, the payment service is activated Over The Air via SMS. The new service will target approximately 700,000 Danes for whom pre-payment is the preferred method of controlling air time consumption. Purchasing air time directly from a mobile phone is a fresh alternative to the scratch card solutions currently available. <<

Re: PKI SIM

>> Gemplus announces GemXplore Trust - an enhanced SIM card for PKI-based Mobile Commerce on GSM

gemplus.com

G‚menos
15 May 2000,

Gemplus, the world's leading provider of smart card-based solutions, today announces the worldwide launch of GemXplore Trust, an enhanced SIM card platform for end-to-end mobile commerce security. GemXplore Trust addresses the rapid growth in demand for mobile commerce applications.

Enhanced SIM card platform with Public Key security

Smart card technology is being universally adopted as the only trustworthy solution for mobile commerce security. Building on more than a decade of experience as the world?s leading smart card solutions provider, and creator of GemXplore, the most popular SIM card operating system in the world, Gemplus has developed GemXplore Trust. The value of GemXplore Trust goes beyond that of a security platform, as Patrick Imbert, Gemplus Mobile Commerce Manager, points out, "GemXplore Trust not only provides Public Key (PK) technology to secure a new generation of wireless transactions but is also a solid foundation on which to build new mobile services. GemXplore Trust brings the mobile phone one step closer to being our most trusted personal device."

Trusted infrastructure

Transaction security is a priority and Public Key-enabled smart cards provide the solution. Imbert says, "The full potential of mobile commerce will be realized only when there is a bond of Trust between the mobile operator and the customer. GemXplore Trust enables mobile operators to provide a trusted infrastructure for mobile transactions, positioning themselves at the focal point of the Mobile Internet value chain by forming a vital bond of Trust with subscribers."

Trust Gemplus

GemXplore Trust is an enhanced SIM card with an on-board cryptographic engine. This engine provides a library of cryptographic functions which can be accessed by standard SIM Toolkit applications to allow the easy creation of PKI client applications on the SIM card. GemXplore Trust uses the universally accepted 1024 bit RSA algorithm which has resisted cryptographic attacks by industry experts for over 20 years. GemXplore Trust also provides advanced anti-SPA and anti-DPA protection for maximum security.

The implementation of any PKI-based application requires the service of a Certificate Authority. Gemplus is also positioned to provide this service.

A flexible m-commerce toolbox

GemXplore Trust is STK phase 2+ compatible, and is built on the world's most popular SIM operating system, with more than 200 million GemXplore SIM cards delivered worldwide. 32 kbytes of EEPROM is provided for storing STK applications and, with the full support of Public Key functions provided in GemXplore CASE, GemXplore Trust is the ultimate flexible toolbox for the development of secure mobile commerce solutions.

Gemplus? off-the-shelf mobile commerce applications

Gemplus already has several off-the-shelf mobile commerce applications which run on GemXplore Trust:

WIM, the smart card-based mobile commerce client for WAP 1.2 and beyond

S@T browser with PK functionality

SmartTrust SmartSignature, a secure PKI client for digital signatures which works with Sonera SmartTrust's mobile PKI solutions

others to be announced in the future.
