John, Intel's announcement may be good for consumers.

I would like to see benchmarking in target applications before I close the book on Transmeta. The newer net applicances will not need to run on a Windows desktop platform and serve a purpose entirely separate from the market for laptops. Thus, the need for a PIII/Wintel type design may not be there.

Transmeta has some novel approaches to power consumption in the handheld devices and reportedly have a leg up on the technology Intel currently employs. It has to do with adjusting power based on the demands placed on the CPU and realizing that a 600 MHz chip doesn't always run at 600MHz.

It will be exiting to see how this plays out. Either way I believe SanDisk will be able to service a wide variety of OS's and CPU designs. The general trend toward power consumption and portability dictates this.
