umbro...

1. laptops have dropped drastically in price.
2. there is corporate ego.
3. folks need to work at home.
4. corporate leaders are technologically ignorant and believe the hype. they have been spoon fed by somebody that the extra $$$ spent on laptops has a payback. ho ho ho ho!

fwiw, my company offered free cell phones to exempt employees. all the rookies salivated and got one. i didn't apply ;-) i don't want a pager, either ;-)

Umbro:

I've seen some of this too. What is interesting is that the more seasoned players have experienced a much higher maintenance cost with their lap tops than their desk tops and are not as keen as they were previously.

No question that the portables provide bigger margins to the box makers (hence they will spend more advertising dollars here) and that they are the current status symbol for many, but I'll stay away from that issue. (g)
