I have serious misgivings about belief systems based on scriptures; they seem terribly susceptible to distortion and demagoguery. Many, perhaps most, will not understand the scriptures, and will look to others to interpret them. There will always be many people who are ready and willing to offer interpretations which suit their own ends. I like disorganized belief systems that stress the personal. When believers organize, whether religious, political, or whatever, I get nervous, and when belief-based organizations turn aggressive, I start worrying.
