C, it is my impression nevertheless that to date no truly viable alternative that can replace oil exists. i believe the main thing we have to take from the article is that we better start thinking about husbanding this finite resource, or there will be trouble. this can only be done by investing in alternative energy sources wherever possible, and beginning to save on oil consumption. gas-guzzling SUV's are NOT the way to go. i have considerably less blind faith that technology will be able to solve this problem without a concomitant change in our oil consumption habits.
btw, one thing that remains beyond contention imo is the fact that the world IS going to run out of oil much sooner than is currently generally assumed. the last giant field was discovered in 1967 and is already past its production peak (Prudhoe Bay). there are no giant fields left to discover, and the last remaining fields that haven't yet reached their production peak (Mid East) will do so soon.
