Haim, that was basically my argument. it is however ludicrous to expect that our oil based economic system can be changed overnight, so the time to institute the necessary changes is NOW, or rather, it was yesterday. i see no credible long term energy policy in any industrialized country. however, the facts regarding rapid crude oil depletion remain facts, no matter how little excitement they currently elicit. i also think nuclear energy should be the subject of continued intensive scientific investigation... regards, hb

Haim, I doubt the sun is a solution. the earth's total area is 500 MM meters square. The flux of the sun is just around 1 kw/sq meter. Thus the maximum flux possible (taking only a quarter, since only half the earth is exposed and the other half involves too tangential an angle of impingement) of usable sun power is only 10 MM kw. Since sun energy conversion efficiency is only 10% (at least in biomass and mass produced solar cells) you end up with barely 1000 MW. Not enough to run this earth. Think coal and shale which combined will have between 200 to 500 years supplies (convert top clean fuels etc.), and by then, hopefully, we will have fusion or even matter/anti-matter reactors. hey, maybe someone will harvest micro worm holes (g).
