hello etc re "Why have an ignore button and s.i. admin? If one simply ignores the bores and twits who happen upon a good thread they will go away" i dislike the ignore feature. i did use it once on some crazed shill on the COMS thread. but imo, you are completely wrong in thinking that "bores and twits" will go away if ignored. why do i say that? because it goes against human nature for people to ignore them. i've never seen it happen, not one single time here on si. in fact, i'm often as put off by the responses to the offender as i am by the offender. a quote from william penn comes to mind: "Truth often suffers more by the heat of its defenders than the arguments of its opposers." so i say never have i seen it effectively demonstrated here on si where a thread can "simply ignore the bores and twits...and they will go away" . as for your comment, "Those few active posters who are left on S.I. might take comfort in a heavy police presence" ... let me say that you are exaggerating here quite liberally. kent state was a heavy police presence. former mayor frank rizzo, who deployed half-tracks on the streets of philadelphia, is a heavy police presence. si admin bob is not a heavy police presence. as for "taking comfort" , i believe that the ability to express contrary opinions in a respectful manner often requires taking the higher road. that is to say, it requires more effort, self-control, conciseness and understanding. and although there is more effort involved there, the 'comfort' is greater. communication essentially breaks down when words like moron and idiot are bandied about. to be clear, si bob does not interfere with someone using those words. but i do not personally 'take comfort' when and where they are used. and to state the obvious here for a moment, those two words that i am using as examples are often indicative of a very apparent negative attitude flowing (spewing?) from the poster. ultimately, i'm sure, we all gravitate to the venue in which we feel most comfortable. that's why i am here and not on rb or yahoo. i will hasten to add that si is still chock full of profanity and contrarianism and pain in the butt posters whose entire existence seems to revolve around annoying people. your post would lead one to think that all of these conditions do not exist here, that si is homogenized and politically correct and pain-free. far from it. a final note.... re "a huge decline in member postings" , don't you feel, as i do, that some folks simply wear out their welcome and go someplace else? i sure do. :) mark
