I used to descend from the mountains to do my banking in Baguio, the nearest town to my retreat. I would end up waiting for the banks and stores to open in a rather pleasant park, designed in the colonial days by the same fellow who laid out Central Park in New York. Unfortunately, the park was subject to an infestation of the most persistent breed of Jehovah's witnesses. After many attempts, I discovered that the most effective way to send them packing was to put on my sweetest smile and politest voice, and tell them (it sounds better in Tagalog, with a full complement of deferentials and honorifics) "I'm sorry, sir, but I'm a Satanist"....

They would always go away.

I don't mind their preaching, in their own churches it's their desire to control the machinery of the state that upsets me. The desire of anyone to force any other people to live under the law's of any religion- that's just not something I'll ever approve of. Of course I can't say it's "wrong" but it's something I will always oppose because I personally don't want to live in that kind of place. I don't expect other people to quit worshipping because I don't- I'd never make laws to force people to take a minute of their day to contemplate agnosticism (or anything else). I'd never tell someone- "Hey, you don't live the way I think you should so you're going to somewhere nasty when you die" and you know what? I don't like it that some people want to do that.

If it doesn't get up your nose that some of the meanest people want to tell other people how to live the "good" life, then either you agree with people who want to run other people's lives or you don't understand what's at stake.
