I think Rand was psychologizing on this one. We do have instincts, or intuition.

Man is not instinctive in the sense that he does not have complex patterns of behavior in-bred. On the other hand, drives and emotions that are natural to him may fairly be called instincts too, and that was the sense in which I used the term. Just as we have a sex instinct, or the social instincts that predispose us to kinds of behavior, we have religious instincts, which is why such behavior is so nearly universal, anthropologically speaking. Why do you suppose that so many people who do not believe in Catholic doctrine, for example, love to go to Mass, especially High Mass? There is a love of ritual, it satisfies deep yearnings...........
