Nortel Fills Gap with $7.8 Billion Alteon Purchase
By Jay Ritter

Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT - news) is stealing a page from Cisco Systems' (Nasdaq: CSCO - news) playbook with its $7.8
billion purchase of Alteon (Nasdaq: ATON - news), a provider of Web switching equipment. Earlier this year, Cisco purchased a
rival firm, Arrowpoint, for $5.7 billion. While the high price may induce sticker shock in some investors, Nortel appears to be
paying about the going rate for what looks like a smart strategic investment.
