Because, looking at the example of kodak,
THINGS CHANGE

Kodak is your typical rust bucket. Back when Fuji came in with a film that was every bit as good as Kodachrome but could be processed in hours (instead of the days it took for Kodachrome) several managers were fired by Kodak for actually bringing the bad news to the attention of the higher ups. Fuji ate their lunch big time. It took them years to catch up. Kodak acted like a classic monopoly.

They have since restructured, but they used to have about 6 layers of management.....no company with 6 layers of management is going to compete with Epson.
