Andy - under certain circumstances itanium can execute 3 instructions - but it requires a degree of compiler support not yet available to get that frequently. There are lots of other architectures based on RISC superscalar concepts which aim at the same target without the need for compiler tricks - Alpha EV8 will have 4 processing units - in effect a 4-way on a chip - with better performance. EPIC has some serious challenges.
