Paul,

why adopt a new, unproven 64 bit "SludgePumper" - which will require a totally new Operating System, New Compilers, and New Re-Writes of ALL SOFTWARE to use the 64 bit features

Why indeed? Exactly the argument against IA-64!

Unlike Itanic, Sludge will offer very high performance x86 compatibility. Unlike Willy, Sludge will offer 64 bit to those fascinated by the concept.

Re: - why adopt a new, unproven 64 bit "SludgePumper"...

Cause it's 64 bit and Willamette's only 32 bit. It may also be faster and will probably have two CPU's in the same size chip as one Willamette.

Next question.

Paul - RE: "So, customers will be faced with a problem - why adopt a new, unproven 64 bit "SludgePumper" - which will require a totally new Operating System, New Compilers, and New Re-Writes of ALL SOFTWARE to use the 64 bit features..or..

Use the widely available, field proven, high performance, cost-reduced Willamette from Intel that runs ALL CURRENT x86 OS and applications?"

Sledgehammer is supposed to be 32bit with 64bit extentions. It should run anything Athlon and Willy can run. As far as I'm concerned, the 64bit extension isn't going to be a big thing with Sledgehammer. Maybe with future processors it will get the ball rolling. Kinda like MerDUD is paving the way for McKinley. Remember, AMD said adding 64bit support to Athlon only adds 5% to the die size.
