Another trip vignette. I grew up on the East Coast, so I knew about lightning bugs, praying mantises and other neat things. But sitting at a table outside the hotel bar and sipping a brewed malt beverage, I encountered a mythical creature that I'd heard about as a kid but never managed to see.

It was a Luna moth.

It was HUGE. The wings described an approximate triangle six by six inches, and its wings had this pale aqua color. Its - his - body was the size of the last two segments of my pinky. I wanted to see if he'd climb onto my hand, but he freaked and sort of flailed through the air like some sort of bat on paint thinner fumes. He landed on some ivy climbing the building a couple of times, but then he disappeared into the night. I had a faint feeling the rest of the night that I'd had a visitation of sorts.
